Mullvad Review: What Changes When Signup Needs No Email?
Mullvad begins with an account number instead of an email signup. That small difference carries through the service: a flat monthly price, a WireGuard connection, and privacy controls concentrated around the VPN itself.
Mullvad at a Glance
| Feature | What you get |
|---|---|
| Devices at once | Five |
| Streaming | Video traffic supported; no dedicated streaming feature advertised |
| Connection protocol | WireGuard |
| Kill switch | Built-in blocking; additional lockdown controls |
| Split tunneling | Windows, macOS 13+, Linux, Android |
| Ad and tracker blocking | Included DNS content blockers |
App controls and their interactions vary by platform. Mullvad no longer supports OpenVPN, including for manual router configurations.
Signup, Connections, and Everyday Use
An Account Without a Verification Email
Mullvad generates a number without asking for your name, username, password, or email address. Its account-data policy describes the number, remaining subscription time, and configuration records used to provide the service.
Store the number securely, because someone who obtains it may be able to use the account. Card, bank, and other payment methods can still involve personal information even when signup itself is minimal.
A Focused WireGuard Setup
Mullvad removed OpenVPN in January 2026 and now uses WireGuard. Check compatibility first if you have older hardware or a router configured specifically for OpenVPN.
For normal browsing, start with a nearby server and the ordinary app settings. Network conditions, device performance, and server distance affect how calls, pages, and downloads behave.
Five Devices on One Account
The five-device allowance may cover an individual's regular equipment. For shared coverage, count the devices that need access before assuming the subscription fits the whole household.
Mullvad can carry video traffic, but doesn't center its published features on dedicated streaming assistance. Test the media services you rely on instead of treating its privacy tools as proof of compatibility.
What Mullvad Does for Your Privacy
Mullvad encrypts covered traffic between your device and a VPN server. Your ISP sees that connection, Mullvad forwards the traffic, and websites see the server's public IP.
HTTPS still protects secure website contents beyond the server. Account logins, cookies, and information you submit can identify you to websites through the VPN.
The no-logging policy says Mullvad doesn't retain VPN activity such as browsing traffic, DNS requests, or source IP addresses. It separately explains temporary connection checks and account, payment, and support handling.
Mullvad publishes security assessments with dates, findings, and remediation information. Those reports provide evidence about defined systems and periods rather than a permanent guarantee.
Mullvad also reported a 2023 police visit in which authorities left without equipment or customer information. That is a specific event in the public record, not a promise about every future request.

Filtering and Additional Routes
Mullvad includes DNS content blockers for selected unwanted destinations. Multihop can send traffic through more than one server, with extra routing that may affect latency.
DAITA targets traffic analysis by changing traffic patterns. It increases traffic and can affect speed or battery use, so its relevance depends on whether that particular protection matters to you.
The current feature guide explains platform support. Start with the normal connection before adding a specialist mode, so you can understand what changes.
A Few Settings Worth Knowing
The built-in kill switch blocks traffic after a connection failure. Lockdown mode can also keep traffic blocked after an intentional disconnect, which is useful when you want a VPN-required setup.
Split tunneling creates deliberate exceptions that use the direct network and its public IP. On Android, the system's block-without-VPN setting can interfere with excluded apps or local-network access.
Check those interactions if you need a printer, local file share, or direct app connection. A brief reconnect test is more useful than assuming every platform handles the same rule identically.
Using Mullvad on a Home Network
A WireGuard-compatible gateway can cover equipment without a suitable native app. The GL.iNet Brume 2 is a wired gateway that can work alongside existing Wi-Fi equipment.
- Sits on a wired network as a dedicated gateway for OpenVPN or WireGuard traffic
- Can run VPN client and server roles together for remote access and protected outbound browsing
- Has no Wi-Fi radio, making it best for pairing with an existing router or access point
Brume 2 has no Wi-Fi radio of its own. Use Mullvad's current WireGuard profile and check the gateway's routing and blocking settings; app-only tools such as DAITA don't appear automatically in a manual profile.
Paying for Mullvad
Mullvad's standard price is €5 per month, whether you add one month or a longer period. That makes the cost straightforward without a long introductory commitment.
Check the accepted payment methods and applicable refund conditions before adding time. A minimal account doesn't make every payment method anonymous or every purchase refundable on the same terms.
Is Mullvad a Fit for Your Routine?
Weigh the numbered account, flat pricing, five-device limit, and WireGuard requirement against your own needs. Dedicated streaming assistance, OpenVPN, and conventional email-based account recovery are separate requirements to consider.
Download from the official Mullvad page and check the services that matter to you. Its focused design is most useful when the account model and connection tools match what you want from a VPN.
