Windscribe lets you start with a free account and add an email address only if you want a larger data allowance. Behind its connection button, it also offers detailed controls over which traffic uses the VPN and which destinations get blocked.

The free-plan overview explains the data allowance. More advanced plan choices affect server access and filtering options as well as how much data you can use.

Streaming, Speed, and Everyday Use

Begin With the Main Connection Button

Windscribe keeps ordinary use straightforward: select an available location and connect. The recommended connection mode means you don't have to pick a protocol or port before opening a website.

If a network blocks that route, supported apps offer alternatives such as WireGuard and OpenVPN. Change one option at a time so you can see what actually improves the connection.

Match the Allowance to Your Viewing

Free data can cover occasional use, but video and large downloads use it quickly. Pro removes the data cap and opens the full server selection.

Streaming services can still block a shared VPN address. Check your own viewing apps and nearby locations, since unlimited data and guaranteed streaming access are different things.

Unlimited Connections for Personal Devices

Windscribe allows unlimited personal connections. That makes it easier to keep a laptop, phone, and other supported devices connected under one account.

The policy doesn't authorize public account sharing. Local bandwidth and device performance also remain practical limits when several devices are busy together.

What Windscribe Does for Your Privacy

Covered traffic travels through an encrypted tunnel between your device and a Windscribe server. Your local network sees that connection, Windscribe forwards the traffic, and websites see the VPN server's public IP address.

HTTPS continues protecting secure website contents beyond the server. Accounts and cookies can still identify you to the sites you visit.

Windscribe's logging explanation says it doesn't retain browsing history, DNS queries, real or assigned VPN IP addresses, connection timestamps, or session-level usage. It identifies three operational records: last-use date, total bandwidth over the previous 30 days, and activated app versions.

Published app code and security assessments add evidence to inspect. Their scope matters, and the provider's operational-data explanation is more precise than assuming an account leaves no records.

The 2021 Server Incident

In 2021, Ukrainian authorities seized two legacy Windscribe servers with unencrypted disks holding an OpenVPN certificate and private key. Windscribe's incident report acknowledged the missing safeguards and described corrective changes.

The report said forward secrecy protected historical traffic from decryption, while a narrow server-impersonation risk existed under demanding attacker conditions. Remediation included new certificate arrangements and a move toward infrastructure running in memory.

That disclosure belongs alongside later security evidence. It gives readers a specific failure and response to evaluate without treating either the incident or subsequent improvements as the whole record.

Filtering Beyond the VPN Connection

R.O.B.E.R.T. is Windscribe's DNS and IP filtering system. It blocks selected advertising, tracking, unsafe destinations, or content categories, with custom-rule allowances depending on the plan.

Filtering can reduce unwanted requests across connected devices. It doesn't inspect every downloaded file or guarantee that an unfamiliar phishing page will be recognized.

If a necessary site stops loading, review the relevant category or rule. A narrow exception can restore access without abandoning all filtering.

A Few Settings Worth Knowing

Understand the Desktop Firewall

Windscribe's desktop Firewall uses operating-system rules to block traffic outside the VPN. Automatic behavior follows the connection, while always-on modes can keep the computer offline until a tunnel is available.

That is useful when you intend to require the VPN for connectivity. Mobile apps use different operating-system controls, so check the device-specific instructions instead of expecting the desktop menu everywhere.

Split Tunneling Has a DNS Detail

Split tunneling can include selected traffic in the VPN or exclude it on supported desktop and Android apps. Excluded connections use the direct network and its public IP address.

DNS follows a separate rule: while connected, Windscribe says R.O.B.E.R.T. or the configured custom DNS remains system-wide, including for excluded apps. A direct bank connection can therefore still use the VPN setup's name-lookup service.

Split Tunneling in Six Clear Minutes
A simple network example shows why some traffic uses the VPN while the rest keeps its normal internet route.

Check the application after adding an exception. Its main connection and its DNS lookups don't necessarily follow identical paths.

Using Windscribe Across a Home Network

The GL.iNet Flint 2 can run compatible WireGuard or OpenVPN profiles for devices without a native app. Check Windscribe's profile availability for your plan and the router's current setup instructions.

GL.iNet Flint 2: High-Speed VPN Control for a Busy Home Network
  • Pairs Wi-Fi 6 and dual 2.5-gigabit ports with enough capacity for a device-heavy household
  • Runs WireGuard and OpenVPN directly on the router so compatible devices can share one VPN policy
  • Supports AdGuard Home and OpenWrt customization, with an initial firmware update recommended

The router supplies its own device-routing and connection-blocking rules. A manual profile won't transfer the desktop app's split-tunneling controls to every device behind it.

Choosing a Windscribe Plan

Free provides a monthly allowance, Pro includes unlimited data and the full server selection, and Build A Plan offers selected locations. Check the total data and filtering entitlements when configuring a custom plan.

Compare the complete subscription cost and renewal terms against the locations and controls you need. Extra options add value when they solve an actual requirement, not simply because they appear in the settings.

Is Windscribe a Fit for Your Routine?

Decide how much data you use and whether detailed routing or filtering would help your setup. The recommended connection keeps everyday use approachable, with those extra controls available when needed.

Then weigh the specific logging policy, published security work, and incident response. Together they provide a more useful basis for your choice than either the free allowance or feature count alone.
